Baccarat is a popular casino card game. There are basically three variants of the baccarat game: baccarat chemin de fer, baccarat banque, and punto banco. The word “baccarat” has been derived from Italian and French word “zero”, which refers to the value given to tens and face cards.

Baccarat is a simple game with only three possible outcomes i.e. 'Player', 'Banker', and 'Tie'. The main aim of the player is to get a total card value nearer to nine as possible without exceeding it. In this game, up to 15 players can play at a time and each player gets a chance to deal the cards at least once.

The main principle behind the game of baccarat is that the players can bet on the banker, player or tie positions. Two cards each are dealt in two hands on the baccarat table, one of which is the banker’s hand and other the player’s hand. The players participating in the game have to simply bet on the either hand that they think have a value closer to 9.

A card total of 9 is called a "natural" and cannot lose the game. A card total of eight is the second-best hand in baccarat. If both the player and banker have identical hands, then it's a tie i.e. neither the banker nor the player wins, but whoever bet on a tie wins the game.

Baccarat Card Values

Cards 2 to 9 are valued as their face value. All face cards and tens cards are valued as zero, and an Ace card is valued as one. A total hand value is calculated by adding the values of all the cards in hand by modulo 10 division which means that after adding the values of the cards, the result is divided by 10 and then the remainder becomes the total card value.

Baccarat Rules

Baccarat can be played with a six-deck or an eight-deck shoe. The banker and the player each get two cards. If either the player or banker has a total card value of 8 or 9, both stand. If the player's total is 6 or 7, the player stands. If the player stands, the banker hits on a total of 5 or less. If the player's total is 5 or less, the player hits and the banker give the player a third card. If the player receives a third card then the banker draws a third card according to some predefined rules.

House advantage:

The house advantage over the banker’s hand is1.17%, over the player’s hand is1.36% and over a tie is 14.12% at 8:1 payout.
